Old Scratch is the debut full-length from Louisville, Kentucky’s Trophy Wives and it is pure rock ‘n’ roll. Ex Young Widows drummer Geoff Paton is pictured on the insert playing drums with the heavy end of his sticks enough said right. He delivers an intense post-grunge pummeling that really drives this album throughout. The assault provided by the bass and drums gives an excellent foundation for some great guitar interplay, heavy riffage and even some hooks. Trophy Wives do well to embrace pop just enough to draw the listener in and give them something to hang onto but not enough to lose any of their edge. Trophy Wives are clearly a band that is best experienced live. The stereo doesn’t seem to have enough headroom to truly unleash the gut-punching kick drum and driving bass contained in these grooves. Old Scratch is proof enough that rock ‘n’ roll can still kick your ass.
