I was throwing some 7”s on the turntable today trying to find something that grabbed my attention to write about. I passed over about 10 until I landed on this split by Samuel Locke-Ward and Toby Goodshank. Both artists have a mix of silly DIY indie folk songs that were unique instrumentally and lyrically to snag my ear. Samuel Locke-Ward goes through a whole host of vocal personalities in his tracks with quirky styling’s for each track. The individualistic nature of each song works because you can tell Locke-Ward is not taking himself to seriously while still crafting great songs unafraid to test the boundaries of creativity. Toby Goodshank’s side is what snared me to begin with. The honest simplicity reminded me of Daniel Johnston off the bat. The brevity of the second track had me thinking Guided by Voices and then by the last track I was completely enthralled with the off the wall lyrics and auto-tuned vocals over a strummed acoustic guitar. 6 songs packed on a 45rpm 7” two artists making the best of brevity.
