If it seems like I’m talking about Gold Robot Records a lot these days it is because they are putting out insanely great records that are packaged supremely well. The Monster Rally 7” Deep Sea EP is unbelievable and should set the standard for all record packaging. Hand screened cardboard covers with a chic minimalist design that is possibly my favorite cover since Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures with bubble gum pink vinyl. Monster Rally samples and loops old tropicali and exotica records with some serious style for great kitschy fun. Monster Rally is like a modern day Martin Denny making lounge records cool for another generation.
The Parish 7” shares in the great packaging of Monster Rally but has a wholly different sound. The Parish has the country folk styling’s of classic bands like CSNY and the Grateful Dead mixing great harmonies with exciting songwriting. The melodies on this record are intoxicating and warrant repeat spins.
