Latest Flame have been putting out some fantastic records and have been on my radar since they released the Brief Candles beautiful shoegaze record They Live, We Sleep in 2006, which is sadly only available on cd. Their latest offering comes by way of Seattle’s noisy rockers Police Teeth and is available on lp. The album cover has the effortless looks of being taken from inside the bands van on the way to one of their many dive bar gigs. The label on the record itself mimics the old Atlantic records logo and instantly made me think of Led Zepplin as I was putting it on the turntable. Then the needle hit the groove and exploded with the opener “Send More Cops,” shattering all allusions of classic rock with a blistering two minutes of processed vocal shenanigans. Police Teeth don’t return to these heights of abrasiveness, instead they add rolicking, fist-pumping choruses that worm their way into your brain, none more insanely fun as ” There’s no excuse that’s going to satisfy me. Things might seem cool, but we’re as fucked as can be.” The circular chants of “Rock & Roll is a Pyramid Scheme (Parts 1 &2) is by far the stand out moment on this fantastic record. The Police Teeth are clearly a band who have cut their teeth on playing for sweaty, beer drinking, hard partying music lovers and they know how to deliver the goods. Catch them on their forth coming tour and if you’re lucky you might find one of the limited run (100) pink lps floating around.

The Police Teeth record is one of a string of vinyl releases that Latest Flame have been putting out. I would highly recommend the Nervous Curtains lp from 2010 Out of Sync With Time. It’s moody, piano-driven pop ala The Cure meets Nick Cave with a heavy dose of the macabre, led by former Spoon/Paper Chase pianist Sean Kirkpatrick.
